January 12, 2021 Meeting

Date: January 12, 2021
Place: Fountain Green General Store, 84 S Main Fountain Green, UT
Time: 6:30 p.m.

We had a big meeting this month. I think that will be our January meeting from year to year: A lot of big decisions.

Direction For Word Addicts

We had a whirlwind year last year with huge changes and big goals.  As the dust has settled, here's the direction we've found:

We have our local Word Addicts and our expanded group of Word Addicts. We will have our local meetings where we conduct writing exercises and give feedback, etc...Then we will have our expanded group who will participate in our anthology. This will include local and non-local writers. The expanded anthology group will do all of its work online through messaging apps, email, Google Docs, Google Meet, etc...

Election: Nominations were made, and seconded, and affirmed by those present. James presided over the meeting and the election was held near the end.

President: Jenna Madsen
Vice-president: Ray Truitt
Secretary: James Mitchell
Lawrence Gardner remains treasurer.

Anthology: Miscellany 2021

We will follow the same timeframes as last year.  More info will come very soon.

James will send a signup form. At this time we are inviting specific individuals to submit, and all submissions will be accepted. Everyone must agree to rigorous editing and some ground rules.

Each writer will choose a literary theme and write a story within that theme.  We chose the common thread for each story by tossing ideas in a hat and choosing one: Each story must contain an old cottage somewhere in it. Stay tuned for the signup form for details.

Miscellaneous

Lawrence has a retail space and said Word Addicts can use it as a retail space for books by our writers. He would like a 10% consignment for sales.  Jenna recommended a Venmo account. We'll talk over the next month and look at the possibilities.

Action Items

James will create an anthology signup sheet and we'll get to work on this year's anthology!

First Week Wrap-up - Miscellany

In our first week we sold 52 copies of the eBook and 8 copies of the paperback.  I am only including eBook sales in this report, as this is the version we're marketing at the moment. During this week, we reached as high as #52 on the American Anthologies Bestseller chart, which is pretty darn good. There are a surprising number of these books, in the thousands.  So #52? I'll take it. Of the copies sold: 12 were copies redeemed by pre-readers, and were given for free. 5 were copies that I gave away for free to 3 family members and 2 other friends. I assume the remaining 35 copies were legitimate sales. Consider The Following I don't know what personal efforts were made, but I looked at everyone's social media accounts and made an effort to figure out what goes into selling 35 copies of our book.  Here's what I found: 8 posts on personal Facebook pages. 2 active on Twitter with 4 different accounts, including the Word Addicts Twitter account. Several retweets and a fe

Marketing Plan Summary

First and foremost, if we as a group are serious about being writers—taking the time to meet regularly, and create a book of short stories to sell—then it is time to take our marketing strategy seriously as well.  Having been asked to collaborate and lead the Word Addicts marketing strategy, Jenna and Cortney are ready to get going. Having an online presence, or more specifically, a powerful online presence, will dictate your success as a self-publishing author. With that being said, Cortney and Jenna have forged an action plan for the group starting with: ● A professional, catchy name for our writer’s group. (Word Addicts) ● Creating (and managing) social media pages for our group ● Establishing an inviting and helpful blog (with scheduled posts) ● Individual accounts for us as writers—to drive traffic and sales to our blog When discussing the target audience for our 2020 book of short stories, it was decided that instead of advertising the book as a whole, it would be in the g

Marketing Presentation From June 30 Meeting

We will be applying all of these things as a group, but each of us should consider applying them in our personal marketing plans as well.  Much more was discussed with regard to these slides, and I'll try to get some of that on this post within a few weeks.
